Low Activation Energy

Today I want to talk about the topic of activation energy. What do I mean by it? I mean the effort required to start something. Lately, I’ve been lazying around and played game every night after work. After stepping back and reflect. I realized I’ve returned to my old habit which is not aligned with my mission. What’s my mission anyway?

One is to have a popular blog. Of course, to have a popular blog I’ve to start somewhere. The obvious starting point is to start writing my blog. I’ve tested many blogging platforms. Such as Wordpress and Hugo. I find joy in using Hugo over Wordpress. But of course there are missing features of Wordpress such as comments. But that’s beside the point.

The point is even the joyful Hugo isn’t enough for me to write blog post, which is evident in the gap since I last written a blog post. I figure one of the cause is because my will is lower than the effort of starting to write my blog in Hugo. The activation energy, so to speak. One of the hurdle of starting to write in Hugo is having to work on my development PC where it’s stored. Of course I can host my blog on GitHub and work anywhere.

Or better yet, just move the source files into my gaming PC, which I turn on more frequently these days. I’ll do that soon. In fact, in the time of me publishing this post, I might have done it.

Other than that, I’ve actually found a method of even lower activation energy to write. Which is using old school pen and paper. This post is actually written in pen and paper first.

Moving on, I also want to talk a little bit about being old-fashion in modern world. Some of you may think writing with pen and paper is very old-fashioned. Moreover, I actually written this with a fountain pen. There are some advantage s with these old-fashioned methods if you think about it. Which are it can be done without stresses of modern life which is notification, etc. It’s also much easier to pause and resume writing. No turning on/off of the PC.

Other than the inherent advantage there also the effect of nostalgia. I was trained to write since 6 y.o. since kindergarten until me finishing my Bachelor’s degree. Writing is also great for day-to-day life such as filling out forms.

On that note, there are many old-fashioned skills which are very handy and I aspire to obtain the skill in the future. The skill are drawing. Imagine how the engineers of old can do engineering without CAD (Computer Aided Design) Software. I’d reckon drawing can be an alternative to that.

That’s all folks! I’ve to get back to work! Yes, I write this in my lunch break at work!
